I received yesterday the attached application
from Hon. Mr Pollock K.C. for the post of Attorney General of this Colony, and he called upon me today in regard to it. I was somewhat surprised to receive this letter for nothing whatever has been said as to the possibility of the post falling vacant. Mr Pollock in reply to my questions told 'me that he had no knowledge that there was to be a vacancy, but that there were reports current in the Colony that the Chief Justice would retire at the end of April in consequence of the Ordinance re compulsory retirement at the age of 60, and this has led to surmises as to other possible changes. He was not even aware whether the Chief Justice would retire and no one was as there were also reports that he would strenuously oppose it. I was therefore satisfied that there had been no breach of the confidential information contained in your despatch Confidential of November 16th, 1911 which has not left my office.

With regard to Mr Pollock's application you will see from his letter that he has already acted as Police Magistrate and as Puisne Judge, and for a long period as Attorney General, and I believe that in the latter capacity he gave every satisfaction.
TO THE,
RIGHT HONOURABLE,
L. V. HARCOURT. M.P.
SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES.
